OCTOBER 2007
Indigenous Aquaculture Initiative is featured in El Comercio, one of Ecuador's major daily newspapers (Spanish).
Journalists traveled to the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve with Las Lianas' project director Antonio Almeida and a group of  Secoya fish farmers, to observe and document the collection of wild fish for stocking and reproducing in captivity. The goal is to preserve native fish while creating a permanent food resource for the people of the Amazon.

News stories in the Ecuadorian press about our Indigenous Justice project (Spanish).

Las Lianas' partnership with ECUARUNARI (the Confederation of Quichua Peoples of Ecuador) aims to document indigenous legal systems as part of an effort to have these traditional practices for conflict resolution incorported into the national legal system. Read news reports (in Spanish) about this effort, led by Las Lianas' Bolívar Beltrán, here.

DECEMBER 2005
Contracts between Oil Companies and the Military Cancelled
Last spring Las Lianas disclosed the existence of secret security contracts between Ecuador’s army and oil companies. Our report
was distributed widely on the internet and gained a lot of attention in Ecuador. Now, the Defense Ministry has announced that it is annulling these agreements and plans to restructure the way it provides security to the oil industry. Media reports suggest that public outcry triggered by our revelation of the contracts played a part in the decision. We can’t yet say how much better the new plan will be, but we are pleased to have helped end the problematic security agreements. A news report in Spanish is available at:

www.terra.com/noticias/articulo/html/act293075.htm

For background on the security agreements, see the links on this page to our Spring 2005 update (link on left) and to a longer article published in the journal Synthesis/Regeneration (link below under August 2005).
